Here are some hints to help you get the most out of your medicine.
- Educate yourself Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the best ways to manage your medications and any side effects that may occur. When you understand the risks, you’ll be less likely to skip a dose or make a mistake.
- Keep a list handy Create a list of all the medications you’re taking, both prescription and over-the-counter drugs. This can help keep you organized and is useful for family members who may assist you.
- Take your medication with another daily task Try to schedule your medications with other daily routines – at breakfast, bedtime or while brushing your teeth. Use a weekly pill organizer, or set an alarm if that works best for you.

- Automate your refills Talk to your pharmacist about automating your refills, so you never miss another dose. If you’ve ever spent time in a hospital, you know the best part is returning home. Sometimes going home includes packing a bunch of discharge instructions in with your toothbrush and slippers. It’s often hard to listen to and remember all of those instructions as you’re preparing to leave the hospital.
Here are a few helpful tips for your at-home recovery:
Bring a family member or friend. Having a friend or family member with you during the discharge process helps make sure you don’t miss any important details.
Plan ahead. When you’re getting your discharge instructions, make sure you know your diagnosis, how it’s being treated and what next steps you need to take in the form of follow-up appointments, diet and activity restrictions, or tests to schedule.
Ask questions. Medical jargon is confusing. Don’t hesitate to ask about any of the instructions you receive.
Double check your medication. Your most up-to-date list of medications, prior to your hospital stay, should be compared to the medications you get when you are discharged. This helps avoid duplication or dangerous drug interactions. If you’re starting a new medication, make sure you know why, what it’s supposed to do and what to do if you miss a dose.
Report any major side effects. Ask what side effects you need to look for once you’re discharged. Find out who you should contact if needed, and call immediately if you show any signs or symptoms that were discussed.

You should never have to guess which medications are covered by your health plan and which are not. That’s why we provide you with a list of Part D drugs we cover (also called a formulary).
Our list of drugs contains hundreds of different types of medications. But you can quickly search for medications by downloading a copy of the formulary from our website. Visit the Formulary page then use any of the three methods below to find out if your drug is covered.
Search Tool: Open the List of Drugs (PDF). Hold down the ‘Control’ (Ctrl) and ‘F’ keys. When the search box appears, type the name of your drug. Press the ‘Enter’ key.
Alphabetical Index: The index at the end of the PDF lists the names of generic and brand name drugs from A to Z. Once you find a drug name, go to the page number listed to see if the drug is covered.
Medical Condition: The drugs are grouped into categories by type of medical condition. For example, ‘Cardiovascular Agents – Drugs to Treat Heart and Circulation Conditions.’ If you know what your drug is used for, look through the list to find the category. Then look under the category for your drug.
